How is the language issue represented?

  • The language issue is mainly represented negatively.
  • Phrases such as "phonetic script may hinder language and grammar skills" and words such as 'poorly' and 'troublesome'.
  • The language used is linked to age, as words such as 'tweens' and 'younger generation' are used.

 

How does the author represent themselves and others?

  • The author represents others in the text in a positive light making them seem quit clever and well qualified 'Drew Cingel, a doctoral candidate in media'. 
  • The author represents his feelings negatively towards the subject by say words such as 'poorly' and 'troublesome'.
  •  The author also shows himself to be quite intellectual as he uses grammar like 'homophones, omissions'. 

How does the author shape the readers response?

  • The author shapes the readers response straight away using the title 'Texting May Undermine Language, Spelling Skills' this is a negative spin on article straight away and shapes the readers response. 
  • Also to back up what he has said he uses evidence such as 'such as gr8 for great, or an initial, like, LOL for laugh out loud' shapes the readers response to show the audience that what he is saying right. Also he use the quotes from qualified people again to show that what the article is about is believable.
